RYA FB - There are over 2000 non-native species in Britain. Of these 10 to 15% are invasive species, and this means they cause harm to wildlife and the environment, but also to human health and our activities. Once these invasive species establish it's hard to eradicate them and control and can cost a lot of money. Commodore Mark Rushton explains “We were the unfortunate people who got to be the first club to get an infestation of killer shrimp. We need to encourage people to understand that it's not just our problem. We happen to have the killer shrimp, but there are plenty more invasive species out there and any one of these can cause a significant headache for your club.” “We want to prevent this happening at other sailing clubs and encourage you to put in place biosecurity measures to help your sailors to check clean and dry their boats and equipment to prevent the spread of invasive species.” says Kate Fortnam, RYA Green Blue Campaign Manager. https://fb.watch/zz8ckWPJrz/
RYA FB - For Vanessa, sailing became more than a sport - it was a lifeline. After struggling with severe depression, she was offered a place on a free dinghy instructor course that changed everything. “Life turned around after that because I could see that there was a different career path to be had.” Vanessa’s desk job was replaced by wide skies and open water. Now in her 60s, Vanessa is a celebrated volunteer, instructor, and advocate for inclusion. “When you're sailing, you can’t think about anything else. It's a really good way of getting away from everything and just being able to relax your brain. The emotional, the psychological benefits are immense.” This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek , we’re celebrating the benefits of our sport and how powerful time on the water can be. Providing essential financial resources to clubs, to be used to enhance facilities, invest in equipment, develop innovative programs, and cultivate the next generation of sailors. RYA Director of Sport Development, Rob Clark, expresses his excitement to be part of the 2025 judging panel. “What we're really looking for in applications is a passion for how you can get more people on the water, connecting to your communities and being sustainable as possible as a club, working across the UK.
