RYA South FB - British Sailing Team - It's great to see the top end of our sport connecting with and inspiring a new generation of sailors. Inspirational. Hannah Snellgrove headed to Beaulieu Village Primary School to present its sailing club annual awards The comments from the children give us all the feels. She’s my inspiration! She’s so confident.” Stephanie - Year 5. I felt so excited about meeting her - I’ve never known so much about sailing.” Phoebe - Year 5. It was so nice that someone who’d actually been in the Olympics came in to talk to us. Hannah didn’t give up when it was tough. I was planning on quitting but I’m not going to now.” Sadie - Year 6.

RYA Website - Water quality guidance - Discover the latest water quality guidance for clubs, training centres, and participants. Live water quality testing is already available for a range of chemical indicators. However, measuring faecal coliforms and other bacteria hazardous to human health usually requires culturing in a laboratory over 2-3 days. Simple bacterial counts will not indicate the specific species and its impact on human health.  There is now a testing kit available from a company called Fluidion that can produce rapid results. If contamination is high then results are within an hour, if levels are lower it can take up to 12 hours. The RYA is working with our colleagues in the Clean Water Sports Alliance to better understand how clubs could use such devices.  https://www.rya.org.uk/knowledge/environment/water-quality/guidance-for-clubs-and-centres

But all sailors and race officials will want to know the new rules going into 2025. Here’s what’s new in rule 14 (Avoiding Contact) and rule 17 (On the Same Tack; Proper Course):

Rule 14 (Avoiding Contact)
“If reasonably possible, a boat shall (a) avoid contact with another boat, (b) not cause contact between boats, and (c) not cause contact between a boat and an object that should be avoided. However, a right-of-way boat, or one sailing within the room or mark-room to which she is entitled, need not act to avoid contact until it is clear that the other boat is not keeping clear or giving room or mark-room.” The change to rule 14 is ...
