RYA FB - Astronomical winter has arrived Today (21 December) marks the shortest day of sunlight and the longest night. Although, from now on the days will gradually get longer and the light will return.

RYA FB - What is cold water shock? Cold water shock is a real danger in water below 15°C. It causes involuntary bodily reflexes when suddenly submerged in cold water. This includes a rapid increase in heart and blood pressure that can result in cardiac arrest, even if you are in good health. A strong swimming ability will have no impact on your body’s involuntary response to cold water shock. Unlike hypothermia, which kills slowly as heat is gradually conducted away from the body, cold water shock can be lethal in minutes. This is due to a steep decline in core body temperature, resulting in a loss of swimming ability, unconsciousness, and ultimately death. Peter Saxton - RYA South RRO courses 2025 - RYA Regional Race Official courses are suitable for those who are interested in getting into race officiating. Our regional courses are the first level to RYA qualification. Prior experience in race officiating is an advantage, but it is not compulsory as the courses will teach you all you need to know in order to officiate at club events.

As well as being a necessary step to gaining the RRO qualification, the course can also be a useful refresher and reminder of current best practice, including details of the race management changes arising as a result of the 2025-2028 Racing Rules of Sailing. The two courses are planned for the new year:

  • on 15/16 February at Royal Lymington YC, Lymington - details available here. Presenters are Peter Saxton IRO and James Ripley NRO (Sailing Manager at Royal Southern YC)

  • on 1/2 March at Royal London Yacht Club, Cowes - details available here. Presenter is Peter Saxton IRO.

EuroSail - Vendee Globe - At 23h 27min 20sec (UTC) (Monday) Yoann Richomme passed the last of the three major capes of the solo non-stop race around the world, the infamous Cape Horn, in the lead of the 10th edition of the Vendee Globe. In so doing the 41 year old French skipper of the IMOCA PAPREC ARKEA smashes Armel Le Cleac'h's previous record time which was set on the 2016 Vendee Globe (47d 00h 34min 46s) and also sets a new reference time between Les Sables d'Olonne and Cape Horn: 43d 11h 25min 20s. That's 3d 13h 9min and 26s less than Armel's record. At the same time, he establishes a new record for the Cape Leeuwin - Cape Horn sector at 13d 09h 13min 43s. In second, Charlie Dalin was just 09min 30s behind. This makes it the closest rounding by leaders in the history of the Vendee Globe (1h20 separated Francois Gabart from Armel Le Cleac'h in 2012). The MACIF Sante Prevoyance skipper's elapsed time to Cape Horn was 43d 11h 34min 50s. https://www.vendeeglobe.org/en/article/richomme-first-cape-horn-new-record
