RYA FB - Marine Wildlife - One of the many joys of spending time on the water is catching a glimpse of marine wildlife. But do you know how to navigate safely around marine wildlife? When travelling down a river, canal, or coastline, nature delivers a plethora of wild sights and sounds to enjoy. Whether it’s through dolphins riding the bow wave, a group of seals and their pups resting on a rocky outcrop, or spotting a heron stood amongst the reeds. We are fortunate to be granted such a close view of inland and marine wildlife. However, in these moments we must do our bit to navigate safely and responsibly around approaching wildlife. RYA FB - The weather might be warm, but water temperatures are still very cold. If you’re spending time on or near the water this weekend, make sure you know how to keep yourself and others safe. If you find yourself in trouble in the water, Float To Live:
Tilt
your head back with your ears submerged.
Relax
and breathe normally
Move
your arms and legs to improve stability
Don’t
worry if your legs sink, we all float differently
Once
the initial shock has passed, shout for help or swim to safety.

RYA FB - Meet Jerri - “I remember seeing Robin Knox-Johnston finish the Golden Globe in the sixties, along with Sir Francis Chichester, all these people became heroes of mine. I’ve always has this thing about ocean sailing.” Meet Jerri, an inspiring Clipper Round the World Yacht Race crew member who rediscovered her love for the ocean after facing personal upheaval and life-altering changes. An experience she thought might cause discomfort but turned out to be the opposite – a powerful reminder of connection and teamwork. Jerri shares her journey with us: the trials of the race, the warmth of being welcomed by her crew, and the reasons she wouldn’t hesitate to do it all again. Her message is clear: “Trans people are just people. There’s nothing to be feared.” https://fb.watch/AoPz0T7zbT/

RYA FB - 150 years - The early 1950s saw leisure boating take on a new importance. With the media promotion of the ‘nuclear family’, more free time and greater car ownership, the number one aspiration of the so called ‘man in the street’ was to own a boat. The growing range of small coastal cruisers becoming available meant that the whole family could enjoy taking to the together, not necessarily racing. To reflect this exciting shift, 1952 saw the Yacht Racing Association became the Royal Yachting Association, the RYA that we cherish today. The timing for this change was perfect, as sailing, across all genres, was about to be blessed by what became known as the ‘golden era’. The era would end with the RYA recognising the growing importance of the yacht cruising community. This area of boating was growing rapidly as more and more marinas were constructed around our coasts. Read more on our history: http://rya.org/K0qS50WfuVT

Scuttlebutt Sailing - RRS Quiz - Quiz 39 - Boats PI, on port tack, and SO, on starboard tack, are sailing dead downwind bow to bow approaching a leeward mark to be left to port with PI on the inside. When a length from the mark, PI bears off slightly so that she can round the mark leaving it to port without touching it. The booms of the two boats make contact with no damage or injury. SO hails, “Starboard!” and PI hails, “Room!” Both boats hail, “Protest!” SO rounds the mark behind PI. Neither boat takes a penalty. You are on the protest committee...how would you decide this?
